Women’s Soccer secures road shutout at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio (Oct. 22) – A goal in each half and solid defense helped the Denison University women's soccer team secure a 2-0 road victory Tuesday evening in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

The win helped the Big Red bounce back from a tough 1-0 setback this past Saturday. With the victory, Denison improves to 3-1-1 in NCAC play and 8-4-3 overall. The loss drops Oberlin to 2-2-1 in league games and 6-6-2 overall.

A free kick opportunity from 15 yards outside the box was perfectly placed by Reily Brinley. Mara McGlone was able to leap and head the ball high into the air, past the arms of the Oberlin goalkeeper and into the right corner of the net. The score, which was McGlone's fourth of the season, gave the Big Red the lead in the 31st minute of play. Denison was able to carry the one-goal lead into halftime.

Denison added to its lead with an insurance goal in the second half. Maryn Zavislak sent a perfect lead pass ahead to Caroline Flynn, who was able to beat the goalie one-on-one with a shot inside the left side of the post. Flynn's third goal of the season made it 2-0 Denison in the 64th minute.

That was plenty of support for the Big Red, who secured their eighth shutout of the season. Junior goalkeeper Molly Noga made six saves over 90 minutes.

Oberlin held a 19-16 advantage in shots. However, Denison led 8-6 in shots on goal. Oberlin had four corner kicks to two for Denison. The two teams combined for 25 fouls in a physical contest.

Up Next: The Big Red will host Hiram for Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 26. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.
