Denison posts fifth shutout of season in 1-0 victory over Wilmington

GRANVILLE, Ohio (Oct. 2) – A first half goal by Avery Butler helped power the Denison University women's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Wilmington College in a non-conference game Wednesday evening at Kienzle-Hylbert Stadium.

Denison improves to 5-3-2 with its second-straight win. Wednesday's game was the final non-conference game of the season for the Big Red. Wilmington drops to 4-3-2 with the loss.

Butler collected a rebound and scored in the 38th minute of play. Butler was able to corral a rebound just in front of the net and score uncontested following a free kick by Kate Dalimonte

Denison posted a dominant first half, as the hosts outshot the visitors by an 11-3 margin and recorded all five corner kicks over the first 45 minutes. Things evened up more in the second half. Denison edged Wilmington 5-4 in terms of shots over the final 45 minutes.

For the game, Denison held advantages in shots (16-7), shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (6-4).

Defense was once again the difference for Denison. Their experienced and battled tested back line of Sarah Sollinger, Reily Brinley, Dalimonte and Butler remained steady, which allowed Molly Noga to post four saves in 90 minutes to pick up the victory in goal. The group helped turn away several chances when Wilmington attempted to threaten throughout the night.

Mara McGlone recorded a game-high five shots for the Big Red.

Denison travels to Wittenberg University for their North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, Oct. 5. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
