MEADVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 19) – The Denison University field hockey team scored twice in the first half and twice more in the second half as they overpowered host Allegheny College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday morning in Pennsylvania.
Denison moves to 6-1 in the NCAC and 7-6 overall. Allegheny drops to 4-11 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Lila Smith scored the first of two goals on the day to get Denison on the board in the first quarter. Smith scored her eighth goal of the season off a pass from
Claire Willoughby in the 12th minute of play.
Denison added to its lead in the early stages of the second quarter.
Reilly Desmond scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0 Big Red. Desmond's fifth score of the season allowed Denison to lead by multiple goals at the break.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Big Red scored twice in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Emma Gebhart scored her 10th goal of the season to make it 3-0. Gebhart's strike, which came with a little less than 10 minutes to play, was assisted by
Katherine Flanagan.
Four minutes later, Smith scored her ninth goal of the season. Smith's second goal of the day was assisted by
Madden Phelps.
Denison held a sizable advantage in shots (26-4) and shots on goal (18-3). The Big Red recorded 17 penalty corners to just three for the Gators.
Gebhart recorded nine shots while Smith and Desmond finished with four apiece.

Athena Joannou made one save in 30 minutes of action.
Therese Lucian played the final 30 minutes and made a pair of saves.
The shutout was the fourth of the season for the Big Red. All four have come in NCAC play.
