Big Red roll over Fighting Scots for first conference win

GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 6, 2024) – The Denison University women's basketball team scored 26 points in the first quarter and had 15 players with at least one field goal as the Big Red ran away with an 81-39 victory over the College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gymnasium.

Bryana Woodard scored a season-high 11 points and Abby Cooch had 10 points and a season-best six steals.

Maddie Goodman had nine points, her highest scoring output since November 19, and dished out a career-high seven assists.

Abigail Westmeyer matched Goodman with nine points, and Izzy Arguelles had her best game as a freshman with seven points and six rebounds while shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line.

Denison was led in the rebounding category by Molly Fisher with a career-high of nine rebounds.

Katie Houpt sank a 3-pointer in her first action of the season and Maeve Perry scored her first-career basket while Sydney Wood also finished with her first two points of the year.

After leading 24-8 three-fourths of the way through the opening period, Denison ultimately led by 10 points (26-16) after the first quarter and already had eight players in the scoring column.

The Big Red shot 61.1 percent (11-18) and had seven assists on their 11 field goals in the first period before seeing their lead grow to 24 points (46-22) at halftime.

The Denison defense held Wooster to just 1-for-12 (8.3 percent) shooting in the second quarter and kept the Fighting Scots bench off the scoreboard in the entire first half.

It took until the final five minutes of the third quarter for Wooster to surpass Denison's scoring total from the first quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Big Red defense held the Fighting Scots to just one made field goal (1-13; 7.69 percent) for the second time in the game.

Wooster finished the contest with just 10 made field goals and shot just 18.9 percent (10-53) from the field and 18.2 percent (2-11) from three.

Denison, meanwhile, scored at least 20 points in three of the four quarters and sank at least one 3-pointer in all four quarters. Denison also outrebounded Wooster 45-39 and got 40 points from its bench.

The win lifted the Big Red to 10-3 overall, equaling their total number of wins from Head Coach Maureen Hirt's first season leading the team last year.

Denison will play twice on the road next week, starting with a 7 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday, January 10, at Ohio Wesleyan University before traveling to Kenyon College for a 2 p.m. showdown on Saturday, January 13.
