WOOSTER, Ohio (January 27, 2024) – Sophomore
Brooke Toigo scored a career-high 27 points as Denison University women's basketball secured a 75-42 win on the road over the College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon.
Toigo scored 17 of her 27 points in the first half and also led the Big Red with six rebounds. She was 9-for-15 from the field, 3-for-5 from three and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Toigo was the only player in double figure scoring for the Big Red as Denison has 12 different players enter the scoring column.
Abby Cooch, meanwhile, finished with at least four assists for the fifth game in a row while
Maeve Perry finished with a career-best six points as a freshman after going 2-for-3 both from the field and from the free throw line.
Wooster started the game with a 4-0 lead while Denison started just 1-for-9 from the field and then trailed 6-5 halfway through the first quarter.
From there, however, the Big Red were able to overcome their slow start by going on an 8-0 run featuring two layups apiece from
Violet Mitchell and Toigo to take a 13-6 lead with 2:14 left in the opening period. Toigo (9 points) and Mitchell (4 points) accounted for all of Denison's points in the first quarter.
Both teams shot below 28 percent from the field in the first quarter, but then Denison made four of its first six shots in the second quarter and proceeded to open up the period on an 11-0 scoring run in the first three minutes.
That run was capped by a 3-pointer from
Maddie Goodman, making it a 24-8 Big Red lead, and then a 12-0 run featuring six more points for Toigo (1 layup, 4 free throws) made it 36-12 with under two and a half minutes left in the first half.
Denison shot 56.25 percent (9-16) and outscored Wooster 27-5 in the second quarter to lead by 27 points (40-13) at the break after a layup in the final moments by
Abigail Westmeyer. Wooster was within single digits of the Big Red in every quarter aside from the second.
The Big Red led 17-0 in points off turnovers after 11 giveaways by the Fighting Scots in the first half, and were a very effective 10-for-11 from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes.
In the end, Denison capitalized on its speed and height, scoring 10 fastbreak points, 10 second chance points and 42 points in the paint for the game. The Big Red also scored 21 points off Wooster's 19 turnovers.
With the win, Denison remains tied with Ohio Wesleyan University for third place in the conference standings, both with identical records of 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The next game for the Big Red will see them host the Battling Bishops starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31. OWU defeated Denison 68-51 at home earlier this season (Jan. 10).
