GAMBIER, Ohio (January 13, 2024) – The Denison University women's basketball team outscored Kenyon College 20-4 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 24-point victory, 77-53, over the Owls on Saturday afternoon at Tomsich Arena.
Four players scored in double figures for Denison (11-4 overall, 2-2 North Coast Athletic Conference), which was led by
Abby Cooch with 17 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Ada Taute was next with 16 points while
Abigail Westmeyer finished with 13 points and five boards and
Maddie Goodman had 12 points and six assists.
Following a first quarter that featured three ties and four lead changes, Denison led 19-13 after more than doubling up Kenyon in field goal attempts (17-8) and making eight of their 17 shots compared to just four made field goals for the Owls.
Denison finished the final three minutes of the opening quarter on an 11-0 run as
Bryana Woodard started it with a hook shot and Goodman connected on a pair of 3-pointers, all before a 3-pointer from Westmeyer in the final 30 seconds of the period.
Then in the second quarter, another 11-0 run made it 30-17 Big Red four and a half minutes in. Denison was 5-for-5 from the field during that run with a basket from four different players, but after Kenyon cut its deficit down to five points (32-27) following a 10-2 run ending with a 3-pointer in the final three minutes of the first half, it took an and-one by Cooch in the final two seconds to send Denison into the locker room with a 38-29 lead.
In addition to scoring 19 points in each of the first three quarters of the game, Denison was 8-for-15 (53.3 percent) in both the second quarter and the fourth quarter and finished with a season-high field goal percentage of 47.7 percent for the game. It was also Denison's third game in a row with seven made 3-pointers.
The Big Red finished with a season-high 17 steals to go along with a season-low seven turnovers and led 28-7 in points off turnovers and 23-0 on fastbreak points.
Kenyon, meanwhile, shot 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) from the field in the third quarter and outscored the Big Red by one (20-19), but in the fourth quarter it was all Denison as the Owls shot just 2-for-12 overall (16.7 percent) and were 0-for-5 from 3-point range.
After scoring on a layup to make it 62-53 with 7:50 left in the fourth quarter, Kenyon went scoreless the rest of the way and missed its last nine shots of the game while Denison finished things off on a 15-0 scoring run.
Next up, Denison will return home to host DePauw University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17. The Tigers currently lead the conference standings with a record of 12-4 overall and 5-0 in the NCAC.
