HIRAM, Ohio (September 30, 2023) – The first North Coast Athletic Conference match of the 2023 season for the Denison University men's soccer team saw the Big Red come away with a 3-0 win on the road over Hiram College on Saturday.
Cameron McIntosh was responsible for nine points during Denison's 8-0 win at home over Hiram last season, and this time around it was McIntosh who dished the assist on the first goal of the match by
Jake Krueger in the 22nd minute.
Denison made it 2-0 in the 38th minute when
Kameron Kist assisted on the first-career goal for freshman
Tyler Weiss, and then Kist had the assist again on the first-career goal by junior
Corey Brunner in the 54th minute.
Denison outshot Hiram 13-1 in the first half, but only 5-2 in the second. Brunner led the team with four total shots while McIntosh and Kist both added three attempts and
Cole Trigg and Krueger both had two.
Making his first appearance in goal since September 11,
Zach Barr made two saves and recorded his second shutout in three starts this season.
"Today was a great way to start off conference play," spoke Head Coach
Brandon Bianco. "Everyone available was able to get on the field and contribute in a meaningful way. We were proactive the entire game and defended well for 90 minutes. We look forward to building on this performance into the new week."
After winning its first conference opener since 2017 last season, Denison (7-2-1 overall, 1-0 NCAC) has now won its conference opener in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008 and 2009. Hiram, a much-improved team from a year ago, fell to 4-6-1 and 0-1.
Next up, Denison will play at Oberlin College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 4.
