GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 23, 2023) – Three first-half goals proved to be enough for Trine University to pick up a 4-1 victory over Denison University on Saturday afternoon in Granville.
Trine entered the match following a 4-0 win at home over Anderson (Ind.) on Wednesday, a match in which the Thunder scored all four of their goals in the first 10 minutes and 30 seconds of action.
The theme of first-half goals for the Thunder held serve on Saturday as after a save by both goalkeepers in the first 10 minutes of the match, Trine scored first 16th minutes in on an assist by Abby Robison, who finished with two goals and an assist in Trine's win on Wednesday.
Denison was able to answer Trine's first goal of the match with a penalty kick goal by
Caroline Flynn only a minute later, and then the Big Red tried to capitalize on their momentum and take the lead as shots by
Callie Davis in the 20th minute and
Reily Brinley in the 22nd minute were both saved by goalkeeper Sophia Aschemeier.
The Thunder, however, would not be deterred and struck back with a flurry, scoring in both the 32nd minute by Robison and again in the 39th minute to take a two-goal lead.
In the second half for Denison,
Mara McGlone missed right in the 48th minute,
Ellie Reiser missed high and right in the 77th minute, and Davis also missed right in the 80th minute.
Back-to-back shots by
Kendall Sierens in the 81st were saved by Aschemeier and then blocked away by the Trine defense.
McGlone's long shot from over 30 yards out was saved by Aschemeier in the 84th minute, but then a corner kick for Trine in the 85th minute, the only corner kick of the match for either team, led to a header goal for the Thunder.
In all, Aschemeier finished with three saves in each half for the Thunder while Denison outshot Trine 8-1 in the second half and 12-6 overall.
Denison is now 2-2-4 on the season while Trine improved to 4-2-4.
