WESTERVILLE, Ohio (September 27, 2023) – Junior
Caroline Flynn's goal in the 35th minute resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Denison University women's soccer team at Otterbein University during what was also the Big Red's final nonconference match of the regular season.
It was the first matchup between Denison (3-2-4 overall) and Otterbein (4-2-2) since a 3-0 loss for the Big Red in Westerville in 2019.
After a pair of saves by
Molly Noga and one by Otterbein's Ella Schwertfager in the first 22 minutes of the match,
Isabella Guzman found herself in a one-on-one battle in the midfield before playing a perfect through ball just past the Cardinal defender stepping towards her. The pass split two Otterbein defenders and was rolling straight in the middle of the 18-yard box. Flynn, meanwhile, had begun her sprint across the middle several paces before the pass and was a step ahead of her defender. With a one-touch strike off her left foot Flynn launched the ball into the left side of the net granting the Big Red the only goal of the night.
It was Flynn's second goal in as many matches, matching her career total through her first two seasons at Denison.
The Big Red were then outshot 8-5 in the second half and 12-8 for the match as Noga added saves in the 66th, 84th and 86th minutes to finish with a career-high five saves and preserve her third shutout of the season.
Reily Brinley and
Kendall Sierens, meanwhile, led Denison with two shot attempts each.
After a week and a half off from action, Denison will begin North Coast Athletic Conference play next weekend as the Big Red host rival Kenyon College for both their Senior Day and Alumni Day starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 7.
