HIRAM, Ohio (September 23, 2023) – Last season it took a 40-yard game-winning field goal by
Daniel Cunningham for the Denison University football team to defeat Hiram College, but this season no such drama was needed as the Big Red put up a 34-point second quarter en route to taking down the Terriers by a final score of 55-24.
After
Trey Fabrocini scored Denison's first two touchdowns of the game on the ground, the next five Big Red scores came courtesy of quarterback
Jimmy Stines, who threw for four passing touchdowns in the second quarter alone to make it 41-3 Big Red at the intermission.
Stines threw two touchdowns each to
Jon Adamson and
Josh Aiello in the second quarter before throwing his fifth to
Aidan Brownlee to make the score 48-10 in the final three minutes of the third quarter.
In addition to both players finishing with two touchdown catches, Adamson totaled 69 yards on four catches while Aiello had five catches for 45 yards.
Stines is the sixth Big Red quarterback to throw for five or more touchdowns in one game and was the first since Canaan Gebele threw six in a 45-17 win vs. Oberlin College on September 23, 2017. Stines finished 15-for-22 for 213 yards.
The final Denison touchdown of the game saw backup quarterback
Zane Olmstead throw for a score for the second week in a row as he gave Brownlee his second touchdown catch of the day to make it 55-17 with six minutes to go in the game.
On the ground, Fabrocini rushed 17 times for 127 yards, good for an average of 7.5 yards per carry, while
Jordan Waterhouse ran 12 times for 66 yards. Through just four games this season, Fabrocini is already halfway to his single-season record of 20 rushing touchdowns set just last season.
As a team, Denison rushed for 290 yards and passed for 232, reaching over 270 yards rushing and over 500 total yards of offense (522) for the third time in the first four games this season.
Jeff Moore led the Denison defensive effort with six total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss while
Christian Lariviere was next with five tackles and
Layton Reesor added four. Lastly,
Jack Nimesheim added his third-career interception and first pick of the season to end Hiram's first drive of the second half.
In addition to winning its eighth game in a row against Hiram (0-4 overall, 0-2 North Coast Athletic Conference), the Big Red improved to 3-1 overall on the season and 2-0 in the NCAC.
Next weekend will mark the start of a tough three-game stretch for Denison that will see the Big Red face off against Wittenberg University (Sept. 30), the two-time defending conference champs from DePauw University (Oct. 7), and then Wabash College (Oct. 14). Denison and Wittenberg will meet up at 2 p.m. during the Saturday of Big Red Weekend in Granville, Ohio.
