Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Big Red unable to hold onto second-half lead at ONU

ADA, Ohio (September 20, 2023) – Despite holding a 1-0 lead in the second half, the Denison University women's soccer team fell for the first time during its 2023 season, dropping a 2-1 decision on the road at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday night.

Molly Noga made three saves in the first half as Denison was outshot 7-3; but in the second half, there would be no saves for either team.

One minute after a shot that nearly snuck in the right side of the goal for ONU in the 57th minute, the first goal of the match went to Denison's Callie Davis. Davis took the pass from Eliza Roach and fired a left-footed shot from the top of the box that struck the crossbar and went straight down, but managed to just bounce over the line.

Unfortunately, for the second time this season, the Big Red were unable to hold onto a 1-0 lead after giving up a penalty kick goal as ONU answered the goal by Denison just three minutes later with a shot to the bottom left corner on the penalty try.

ONU had a few chances to try and find the go-ahead goal in the final 15 minutes, missing high on a header in the 77th minute and missing a pair of shots wide left in the next minute and a half.

That all led to the game-winning goal in the 80th minute as a through ball by Haley Cannon found Elizabeth Pierce open in the middle of the field against Noga, and Pierce beat her to the near-post.

Davis tried to get off another shot in the 85th minute again with her left foot, but was hounded by the ONU defense and was unable to get off a strong attempt.

Davis then had corner kick from the right side of the field in the final three minutes, but it was unable to find the head or foot of a Big Red attacker.

Denison fell to 2-1-4 on the season while ONU, which was coming into the contest with the Big Red after playing four matches against nationally-ranked teams in its first six matches of the season, picked up its first win of the year at 1-5-1.

Next up, Denison hosts Trine University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, in Granville, Ohio.
