GENESEO, N.Y. (September 2, 2023) – The Denison University field hockey team opened the season with a 1-0 loss at SUNY Geneseo on Saturday.
It was the first-ever meeting between Denison (0-1 overall) and SUNY Geneseo (2-0) as the Big Red were held to just one shot through the first three quarters.
Junior
Athena Joannou made two of her three saves in the first quarter and had three saves in the first half before the Knights' Sam Lewis got one past her following a penalty corner in the 37th minute.
Denison's had two attempts to tie it in the fourth quarter, but senior
Kristin Kelley's shot was blocked in the 46th minute and freshman
Lila Smith's was saved by Geneseo goalkeeper Sarah Quinlan in the 53rd minute.
The second of back-to-back games on back-to-back days in New York to open the season for the Big Red will see Denison square off against No. 18 the University of Rochester starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 3.
