GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 16, 2023) – The Denison University women's soccer team finished off its four-match homestand with its third tie in a row, finishing in a 1-1 draw against Centre College on Saturday afternoon at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Centre nearly scored first with a header off a corner kick that just missed wide left in the seventh minute, and then a shot by the Colonels in the 11th minute was just knocked away by the Big Red defense before it could get to
Molly Noga.
Denison's first shot was saved off the foot of
Sophia Connell in the 20th minute before another blocked shot by the Big Red defense just 43 seconds later.
That led to an aggressive play by
Caroline Garrard against the Centre goalkeeper Anna Thomas as Garrard was able to knock the ball away from Thomas and into the goal to start the scoring in the 23rd minute.
There would not be another shot on goal until
Callie Davis' attempt was saved by Thomas in the 53rd minute.
Then after Noga made her first save of the match in the 65th minute, the fourth blocked shot of the match by the Denison defense unfortunately found its way back to the Colonels' Maggie Corbett, who scored to tie it at 1-1 in the 70th minute.
Noga made her second save in the 84th minute to keep it tied, and then another shot on goal by Davis was fumbled by Thomas before being picked up in the 87th minute.
Denison was outshot 6-2 in the first half and 6-3 in the second, but led 4-3 in shots on goal.
Denison remained undefeated at 2-0-4 on the season while Centre moved to 4-1-2.
Next up, the Big Red will see a familiar face as they travel to take on Ohio Northern University and first-year head coach Ben Tierney starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20, in Ada, Ohio. Tierney served as the assistant women's soccer coach at Denison the previous three seasons, helping the Big Red capture the 2021 North Coast Athletic Conference Regular-Season Championship and 2022 NCAC Tournament Championship.
