No. 16 Big Red hold off Colonels in 3-2 victory

GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 15, 2023) – The first home match since the opening weekend of the season saw the No. 16 nationally-ranked Denison University men's soccer team remain undefeated six matches into the season. After a wild final few minutes to the match, the Big Red came out on top by a final score of 3-2 over Centre College on Friday night under the lights inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

In the 11th minute, a beautiful pass into the box from Miles Crosser found the head of Rohan Tripathy, who just missed high and right.

One minute later, Crosser drove in between two defenders and into the box to draw the foul, setting up a penalty kick goal by Kameron Kist, who finished low and to the right of the diving goalkeeper, Jacob Camacho.

After a nice dump off pass by Tripathy, a side shot by Corey Brunner challenged Camacho to make a save in the 24th minute.

Denison's goalkeeper Tommy Prokos, meanwhile, made saves in the 17th and 41st minutes and was not challenged again until the final four minutes.

Phil Koutsaftis had a chance to score with a strong shot on goal in the 54th minute that was somehow stopped in desperation by Camacho, and then Kist's shot in the 62nd minute was also saved.

An insane sequence ensued in the 76th minute when a shot by Jack Rice was blocked, and then a shot by Tyler Weiss that resulted in a defensive save was knocked up in the air for a header goal by Rice to make it 2-0 Big Red.

Kist then netted his second goal of the match with exactly seven minutes remaining before Centre scored in the 87th minute and again in the final minute to put some pressure on the Big Red defense at the end.

"Tonight was an exciting college soccer match," spoke Head Coach Brandon Bianco. "We obviously have to address the finish of the match, but the first 87 minutes were really good. I'm proud overall of the performance and we'll look at a few things moving forward."

For the fourth time this season, Denison (5-0-1 overall) matched up against an opponent for the first time in its history while Centre, a team that advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament back in 2019, fell to 2-3.

Next up, Denison will head into a big road matchup against the top team in the region and No. 5 nationally-ranked John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 20. Last season, it was the Blue Streaks who handed the Big Red their first loss of the year seven matches in with a 1-0 decision in Granville.
