WOOSTER, Ohio (September 13, 2023) – The Denison University field hockey team won its first North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the 2023 season with a 1-0 victory on the road at the College of Wooster on Wednesday evening.
Denison's lone shot of the first half was a shot by
Kristin Kelley that was saved by Cate Barkdoll four minutes in.
In the second quarter,
Athena Joannou made back-to-back saves in the 20th minute before three straight penalty corners for Denison in a span of 35 seconds starting midway through the 22nd minute began to give the Big Red some momentum.
In all, Denison was outshot 4-1 in the first half while Joannou made three saves to help keep it scoreless.
The third quarter, however, was all Big Red as Denison put up four penalty corners and four shots and found paydirt in the 43rd minute when a penalty corner by
Kate Hinshaw saw a pass from the top by
Grace Lock go over to
Helen Breen on the wing for her first goal of the season.
That would be enough to clinch the win as Joannou and the Big Red defense withstood back-to-back penalty corners and a shot on goal by the Fighting Scots in the 55th minute.
Abigail Hano led Denison with two shots on the game while Joannou totaled four saves and her second straight shutout.
With the win, Denison improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC while Wooster fell to 1-1 and 0-1.
Next up, the Big Red will return home to Deeds Field-Piper Stadium for a three-game NCAC homestand starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, against Allegheny College.
