GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 10, 2023) – The Denison University field hockey team played in its first home game of the 2023 season on Sunday, and it was a triumphant day as the Big Red picked up their first win of the year with a 1-0 decision over No. 16 nationally-ranked Washington and Lee University. It was the second nationally-ranked opponent for Denison (1-2 overall) in its first three games of the season.
After three penalty corners by the Generals and a pair of saves in the first five minutes of the game by Denison goalkeeper
Athena Joannou,
Kate Hinshaw took the first penalty corner of the game for the Big Red. Hinshaw got the ball to
Kristin Kelley, who then passed it inside to freshman
Tabitha Chandler for the first goal of the season for Denison in the 10th minute.
In all, the Big Red were outshot 6-1 in the first quarter and had to withstand four penalty corners as Joannou made three of her four saves in the game in the opening period.
Neither team got off a shot attempt in the second quarter while Denison proceeded to outshoot Washington and Lee 3-1 in the third quarter.
Reilly Desmond's shot was saved in the 34th minute while a pair of shots by
Grace Lock in the 35th minute were blocked and then wide.
Lastly, a shot by
Cary Mauck in the fourth quarter (54th minute) was also saved.
For the game, W&L outshot Denison 9-5 overall and 4-3 on shots on goal, and held a 9-2 advantage on penalty corners.
W&L, which was coming into the game with the Big Red off a 6-1 win at Denison's rival, Kenyon College, on Saturday, fell to 1-3.
Next up, Denison will begin North Coast Athletic Conference action at the College of Wooster, slated for a 4:30 p.m. start on Wednesday, September 13.
