ALMA, Mich. (September 1, 2023) – The Denison University women's soccer team came away with a 2-1 victory on Friday thanks to a pair of second-half goals only eight minutes apart by sophomore
Kendall Sierens. That would be enough to send DU past Alma College in their 2023 season opener. It was also the first career win for new Head Coach
Sarah Brink in her first game leading the Big Red.
After an early defensive misplay and own goal by the Big Red allowed Alma (0-1 overall) to get on the scoreboard first just six minutes into the match, Denison (1-0) outshot the Scots 12-5 in the first half and then Sierens got the Big Red on the board just over six minutes into the second half thanks to the assist from senior
Callie Davis.
Just over eight minutes later, it was another senior,
Caroline Garrard, who found Sierens for the go-ahead score and eventual game-winning goal.
Sierens and Garrard both tallied three shot attempts and two shots on goal while
Eliza Roach also fired three shot attempts.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Molly Noga made two saves in the final 19 minutes of the match to preserve the one-goal victory.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Big Red as they remain in Michigan to face Adrian College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 2.
