GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 4, 2023) – No. 13-ranked and top-seeded Denison University men's lacrosse defeated Oberlin College 18-6 in the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals to win its eighth game in row and set up a rematch for the championship against Kenyon College. With the win, the Big Red will host the Owls in the championship game on Sunday, May 7, at 1 p.m. inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Tommy Quinson led the way with six goals while
Nate Kay (3 goals, 1 assist),
Will Kenney (3 goals, 1 assist) and
Ethan Tyack (1 goal, 3 assists) all finished with four points.
After Oberlin won the opening faceoff and
Archer Darrach made a save on the first shot of the game, Quinson set the tempo with a goal just under a minute and a half in before Denison ultimately took a 6-0 lead on a goal by
Lawton Corrigan with six minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Quinson scored twice during Denison's 6-0 run to start the game and then scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it 7-1 Big Red less than a minute into the period.
A goal by Kenney made it 8-2 just under four minutes into the second quarter, and then after Oberlin cut its deficit to 8-4, another goal by Kenney with four and a half minutes left in the first half started a 5-0 Big Red run that ended with a goal by
Jack Hines to make it 13-4 just over a minute and a half into the third quarter.
Denison scored three goals in the final 1:01 of the third quarter by Quinson, Kenney and then again by Quinson to take a 16-5 lead into the fourth quarter.
Denison was 24-of-28 faceoffs as
Grant Larson was 13-for-17 and
Colin MacLean was 10-for-10.
Both Larson and MacLean finished with seven groundballs while Darrach, Quinson, Tyack, and
Andrew Brim all had four groundballs.
Brooks Crowley finished with two caused turnovers while he,
Douglas Brooks and
Owen O'Neill each added three groundballs.
Darrach finished with 10 saves and six goals allowed for a .625 save percentage.
Denison improves to 15-3 on the season and will host the No. 2 seed, Kenyon, on Sunday, May 7, at 1 p.m. The Owls defeated third-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University 12-10 in their semifinal matchup on Thursday in Gambier, Ohio. Denison defeated Kenyon by a final score of 12-10 in the 2021 NCAC Championship and 12-5 in the 2022 NCAC Tournament Championship.
