Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 13 baseball uses shutout, eighth-inning comeback to sweep Kenyon

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 2, 2023) – The No. 13 Denison University baseball team shutout the Owls 2-0 in game one before needing to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 9-8 victory in game number two against Kenyon College on Saturday at the Big Red Baseball Field.

Game 1 (No. 13 Denison 2, Kenyon 0):
  • Both teams were held to only five hits in the game, but Denison was able to push across two runs on two sacrifice flies to center field by Noah Leib.
  • The first run came in the fourth inning after Eric Colaco led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt by Charlie Glennon then moved Colaco from second to third before Leib's first sac fly.
  • The second run came in the sixth inning as Matt McClements led off with a single and later advanced to third on a bunt single by Glennon before Leib again drove in the run with a sac fly.
  • Denison's starting pitcher, Charlie Fleming (5-1), was dominating, throwing 7.2 innings allowing just four hits while not issuing a single walk and striking out 12 hitters.
  • After a leadoff triple for Kenyon in the top of the second inning, Fleming recorded 11 straight outs.
  • Ryan Starr recorded the final out of the eighth inning with a swinging strikeout before George Viebrock earned his third save of the season by pitching the ninth.
  • Josh Bohn finished with two hits and a double for the Big Red offense.

Game 2 (No. 13 Denison 9, Kenyon 8):
  • Down 8-6 with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Owen Wilson was hit by the pitch and Alex Vasquez and McClements both walked to put the go-ahead run on base.
  • A balk by the Owls then scored Wilson and moved both McClements and Vasquez into scoring position, setting up the go-ahead two-run single up the middle by Colaco.
  • Ari Fierer then moved from third base to pitch in the ninth inning and worked around a one-out double to earn his fourth save of the season and second save this week.
  • Patrick Neenan (4-1) also worked around a leadoff double in the eighth inning and finished with 1.2 innings pitched to earn the win.
  • Denison scored quickly in game two with an RBI-double by Glennon and a two-out RBI-single by Jake Welsch in the first inning.
  • Then after Nick Falter struck out the side swinging in the top of the third inning, Leib came up with an RBI-double down the left field line to make it 3-0 in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Falter then recorded a 1-2-3 fourth inning, but ran into trouble in the fifth when the Owls started off the inning with four straight singles to get on the scoreboard. Kenyon kept the inning going with an RBI on a fielder's choice and another single to tie it at 3-3 and chase Falter, and then added three more runs to finish with a six-hit, six-run fifth inning and double up the Big Red at 6-3.
  • Colaco finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored while Welsch was 2-for-4 with two RBI's.

Records:
  • No. 13 Denison improves to 19-4 overall and 6-0 in the NCAC while Kenyon falls to 13-10 and 1-5.

Next Up: Denison will play at Case Western Reserve University starting at 12 p.m. on Easter Sunday (Apr. 9).
