No. 14 baseball remains unbeaten in NCAC

HIRAM, Ohio (April 23, 2023) – The No. 14 Denison University baseball team swept Hiram College by scores of 12-0 in seven innings in game one and then 9-1 in game two on the road on Sunday to remain undefeated in 12 North Coast Athletic Conference games so far this season.

Game 1 (Denison 12, Hiram 0):
  • Charlie Fleming (7-1) limited the Terriers to just two hits while pitching all seven innings to earn his first complete game and first shutout of the season. He struck out seven batters and did not issue a single walk as well.
  • After a one-out single in the bottom of the third inning, Fleming picked off the runner at first base and then retired 13 batters in a row to end the game.
  • Denison, meanwhile, scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, got an RBI-single by Owen Wilson in the third inning, and then saw a three-run home run to left center field from Jake Welsch to make it 6-0 in the fourth.
  • Four more runs in a fifth inning that included RBI-doubles by both Eric Colaco and Noah Leib then made it 10-0 Big Red before a two-run home run again to left center field by Charlie Glennon in the seventh inning.
  • Wilson and Ari Fierer were both 3-for-4 to lead the way offensively.

Game 2 (Denison 9, Hiram 1):
  • Kuyper Lashutka led off the third inning with a single to shortstop and was followed immediately by a two-run home run to left field by Colaco to start the scoring in game two.
  • Glennon then followed Colaco with a single down the left field line before scoring from second base on a two-out single through the right side by Welsch to make it 3-0.
  • Then in the fourth inning, Wilson and Alex Vasquez both singled to lead things off before a sacrifice bunt by Lashutka moved both runners into scoring position, setting up a two-run double to left field by Colaco before Glennon hit his second two-run home run of the day to left field to make it 7-0 Big Red.
  • It was again Colaco and Glennon making their presence felt in the sixth inning as Colaco singled to center field with one out and stole second base before scoring on the ensuing single also to center field by Glennon to make it 8-0.
  • Colaco finished 3-for-5 with four RBI's and three runs scored while Glennon was 3-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs.
  • Nick Falter (5-0), meanwhile, held Hiram to without a hit until the fourth inning and then struck out the side in the fifth inning before ultimately finishing with six innings pitched allowing just three hits, zero runs and two walks while striking out 10 batters.
  • Ryan Starr pitched the seventh inning allowing just one walk before Fierer finished off the final two innings allowing two hits, no walks and one unearned run.
