No. 13 baseball earns big sweep over Wooster

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 15, 2023) – For the second straight year, the No. 13 Denison University baseball team hosted the College of Wooster for their series during the regular season, but this time around, the Big Red earned a big sweep over the Fighting Scots with wins of 8-2 in game one and 11-0 in seven innings in game two on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red also finished with 12 hits in both games.
 
Game 1 (Denison 8, Wooster 2):
  • Charlie Glennon launched a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning, and then after three straight singles to lead off the top of the third inning allowed Wooster to tie it, Denison took back the lead with a sacrifice fly to right field by Jake Welsch followed by a two-out, two-run single through the right side by Josh Bohn to make it 3-1 in the fourth inning.
  • The Big Red added two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI-single to left field by Glennon followed by an RBI-double to center field by Noah Leib.
  • A bunt single by Owen Wilson scored Bohn in the sixth inning and then Denison made it four innings in a row with at least one run as an RBI-groundout by Welsch allowed Leib to score before a two-out double down the left field line by Bohn brought in Ari Fierer to make it 8-2 after seven innings.
  • Bohn finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's while Glennon, Leib and Fierer each added two hits and two runs for the Big Red.
  • Charlie Fleming improved to 6-1 on the season with 6.2 innings pitched allowing nine hits, two runs and zero walks while striking out eight.
  • Will Rettig then pitched the final 2.1 innings not allowing a single hit or walk while recording five strikeouts to earn the save.
 
Game 2 (Denison 11, Wooster 0):
  • Nick Falter (4-0) pitched all seven innings allowing just two hits, one walk and four strikeouts to earn the complete game shutout.
  • Falter used a 5-4-3 double play to work around a hit by pitch in the first inning, stranded a two-out triple in the second inning, pitched a 1-2-3 third inning, and then got a 4-6-3 double play to work around a hit by pitch in the fourth inning.
  • In the bottom of the first for Denison, Eric Colaco led off with a single to shortstop, stole second base, moved to third on a single to center by Glennon, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Leib.
  • Glennon then stole second and advanced to third base on an errant throw by the Wooster catcher before scoring on a single up the middle by Fierer.
  • Fierer then went from first to third on a single to left center field by Welsch before scoring on a single through the left side by Bohn to make it 3-0 Big Red in the first inning.
  • In the bottom of the second, Wilson led off with a triple to center field and then scored on the ensuring single through the left side by Colaco.
  • In the third, Fierer led off with a walk and was followed by a double down the left field line by Welsch before scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field by Bohn.
  • Two batters later, Welsch scored on a single through the left side by Alex Vasquez to make it 6-0.
  • Lastly, in the fourth inning, a two-out walk by Leib led to a five-run inning for the Big Red that was wrapped up with a three-run triple to right center field by Vasquez.
  • After leaving two runners on base in the top of the fifth inning, Falter shut down the Fighting Scots in order in the final two innings to finish it off.
  • Welsch finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored while Fierer was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI's and Vasquez was 2-for-3 with four RBI's.
 
Records:
  • No. 13 Denison moved to 21-6 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Wooster suffered its first two losses on the road of the season and dropped to 9-15 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
 
Next Up: Denison will play at Oho Northern University starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 16.
