LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 4, 2023) – After moving up six spots to No. 12 in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top-25 poll, the Denison University baseball team won its fourth game in a row to open the 2023 season with a decisive 13-0 victory over No. 21-ranked North Central College on Saturday at the Derby City Classic.
Denison jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI-double by
Eric Colaco.
A leadoff double by
Noah Leib in the top of the second inning led to a sacrifice fly by
Josh Bohn before Colaco hit his second home run in the first four games of the season, this one a three-run blast to make it 5-0 Big Red.
Denison was relentless at the plate and added three runs on four hits in the third inning, the last of which was an RBI-single by Bohn, who then smashed a two-out grand slam to make it 12-0 in the fourth inning.
Bohn would finish 2-for-2 with a home run and six RBI's for the game while Leib was 2-for-2 with two doubles and three runs scored,
Jake Welsch was 2-for-3 and Colaco was 2-for-4 with four RBI's, a homer and a double.
On the mound,
Charlie Fleming improved to 2-0 with six innings pitched allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out five.
Patrick Neenan then pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning and sent the final two batters down swinging.
Denison will return to Derby City Field to battle the tournament hosts from Spalding University (Ky.) at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 5. Spalding will be the third team receiving votes in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top-25 poll the Big Red will face in their first five games of the season.
