No. 18 men’s lacrosse wins neutral-site contest

NORTH BETHESDA, Md. (March 14, 2023) – The No. 18 Denison University men's lacrosse team started off Spring Break with a 14-10 neutral-site win over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Tuesday night at Georgetown Preparatory School.

Trailing 6-4 at halftime after the final two goals of the first half went to the Seahawks, Tommy Clayton scored just under five minutes into the third quarter, and then just three minutes later Tommy Quinson assisted on a goal by Luke Fisher to tie it up.

Just two and a half minutes after that, Quinson again had the assist, but this time on a goal by Reid Edelstein to give Denison the lead.

That lead than became 8-6 as Grant Larson won the ensuing faceoff and ran straight down the middle of the field to score.

After a goal by the Seahawks with just under four minutes left in the third quarter stopped the 4-0 Big Red run, Clayton assisted on a goal by Ethan Tyack to cap a 5-1 third period for the Big Red just as the buzzer sounded to end the period.

Following a caused turnover and groundball on the first possession of the fourth quarter by Brooks Crowley, Denison then went ahead by three on a goal by Jack Hines assisted by Fisher less than a minute and a half into the final period.

Tyack notched the 11th goal of his senior season following a caused turnover and groundball by Grant Maynard to make it 11-7 with 10 and a half minutes remaining. Then a pair of goals less than a minute apart by St. Mary's cut their deficit in half to 11-9 with eight and a half minutes left to play.

Fortunately for the Big Red, just under the three-and-a-half-minute mark, Nate Kay scored, and then the ensuring faceoff resulted in a groundball to Tyack, who quickly found Kay open in the middle of the field for his second goal in just 12 seconds.

Just before the final horn went off, Crowley picked up the groundball and launched a shot from midfield that found its way into the back of the net to wrap up the game in style.

Denison was paced offensively by Tyack (3 goals, 1 assist), Kay (3 goals), Clayton (2 goals, 1 assist) and Fisher (1 goals, 3 assists).

Brooks and Maynard both finished with three caused turnovers while the Big Red had five players record four groundballs.

Archer Darrach finished with 11 saves and a .524 save percentage. He has made at least 11 stops in all four games so far this season.

Tuesday marked the first meeting between Denison (3-1 overall) and St. Mary's College of Maryland (5-4) since the 2015 season. The Big Red are now a perfect 10-0 all-time against the Seahawks since the two teams first played each other in 1977.

Denison will wrap up Spring Break by hosting the current second-ranked team in all of NCAA Division III, Gettysburg College, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
