BEREA, Ohio (February 18, 2023) – The No. 18 Denison University men's lacrosse team started off its new 2023 season on a high note with a 15-5 win at Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday afternoon at Tressel Field.
Denison (1-0 overall) led 4-0 to start the game after a goal by junior
Luke Fisher less than three minutes in, followed by back-to-back goals only 18 seconds apart by senior
Ethan Tyack just over 10 minutes in before a goal by sophomore
Tommy Quinson with two minutes left in the first quarter.
Fisher would add his second goal of the game just over a minute into the second quarter before goals by seniors
Gavin Pappas and
Douglas Brooks helped make it a 7-2 Big Red lead at halftime.
An early third quarter goal by
Jack Hines was followed up by Quinson's second goal just 11 seconds later to make it 9-2 Big Red before Denison scored the final six goals of the contest in the fourth quarter.
Fisher would finish with three goals to record the first hat trick of the season for the Big Red while Quinson led the team with four points (2 goals, 2 assists). Both Tyack (2 goals, 1 assist) and senior
Reid Edelstein (1 goal, 2 assists) matched Fisher with three points.
Sophomore
Colin MacLean won 12 of his 14 faceoffs and led Denison with seven groundballs while Brooks added three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
In goal, senior
Archer Darrach played all 60 minutes and made a career-high 19 saves.
Denison will remain on the road next weekend as the Big Red battle Hampden-Sydney College at 12 p.m. on Sunday, February 26. The Tiges are the second team mentioned in the receiving votes section of the first USILA/Dynamic Men's Coaches Division III Poll of the regular season.
It was the sixth consecutive season-opening victory for the Big Red.
