LEXINGTON, Va. (December 29, 2023) – The Denison University men's basketball team scored 100 points for the first time in seven seasons and was victorious in a neutral-site contest over Susquehanna University, 100-80, in its first game of the W&L Holiday Tournament on Friday.
Denison put up 58 points in the first half alone after a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer by
Scotty Dean. The Big Red shot an incredible 71.9 percent (23-32) from the field in the first half and put up a very balanced offensive display with nine players making at least one field goal and their top-two scorers (
Aidan King,
Ricky Radtke) combining to go 9-for-9 from the field.
In the end, six Denison players scored in double figures, led by King with 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting.
Radtke, who finished 5-for-5 from the field, tied with Dean, who made three 3-pointers, with 13 points while
Emmett Burnside notched his first-career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Nick Heath matched Burnside with 11 points while
Trevor Reed added 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Denison reached 90 points for the third time this season and 100 points for the first time since a 104-63 win over Allegheny College on January 7, 2017.
Denison also shot 67.9 percent (38-56) from the field, finishing over 60 percent in a game for the first time since shooting 61.1 percent (33-54) in a 92-76 win over the College of Wooster on February 27, 2021. The program record is 69.2 percent shooting (45-65) vs. Marietta College on November 28, 2004.
It was only the third meeting all-time between Denison (8-4 overall) and Susquehanna (7-3) and was their first matchup since the 1971-72 season (41 seasons). In addition, it was the end of Susquehanna's five-game winning streak while Denison improved its own winning streak to six games.
Denison will be back in action tomorrow on Saturday, December 30, in the championship game against the hosts from Washington and Lee University starting at 4 p.m.
