Fabrocini powers Big Red past Kenyon

GRANVILLE, Ohio (November 4, 2023) – The Denison University football team fell behind 9-0 in the first quarter but then rattled off 38 unanswered points and was backed by four total touchdowns by Trey Fabrocini as the Big Red ultimately topped Kenyon College 38-15 in what was also Denison's final road game of the 2023 season on Saturday afternoon.

It was a rough start for Denison (6-3 overall, 5-2 North Coast Athletic Conference), which saw its first two drives of the game end with an interception and then a safety to start off the scoring before a 35-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing Kenyon (1-8, 1-6) drive made it 9-0 with 5:25 left in the first quarter.

The Big Red then turned the ball over again with a fumble on their final drive of the first quarter, but the Denison defense was able to force its second three-and-out of the game and set up the first scoring drive of the game for the Big Red.

After a nine-play, 37-yard drive, Denison's lone points of the first 29 minutes of the game came via a 45-yard field goal by Daniel Cunningham with 10:25 on the clock in the second quarter.

Finally, with just 31 seconds left in the first half, Fabrocini was able to wrap up a big 15-play, 95-yard drive by punching in his first touchdown of the game from eight yards out and making it 10-9 Big Red at halftime.

Denison then opened the second half by going 70 yards on just three plays as quarterback Jimmy Stines ran for 55 yards on play number two to get it down to the two-yard line and setup a two-yard rushing touchdown by Fabrocini.

After an interception by Jonathon Higle three drives later to set Denison up at the Kenyon 10-yard line, Fabrocini hauled in a nine-yard touchdown pass from Stines just three plays later to make it 24-9 with 8:17 on the clock in the third quarter.

Fabrocini added to his strong performance with his third rushing touchdown of the game, this time from just one yard out early in the fourth quarter to cap a seven-play, 41-yard drive.

Then after a turnover on downs on the next Kenyon drive after a quarterback hurry by Jeff Moore on fourth down forced an incomplete pass, Josh Aiello scored one play later with a 31-yard touchdown reception to keep his streak of scoring at least one receiving touchdown in all nine games so far this season alive.

In addition to the 38 unanswered points by the Big Red offense, the defense played well throughout as it took until its final drive of the game for Kenyon to pick up its first first down of the second half.

Denison outgained Kenyon 424 to 198 and limited the Owls to just 3.1 yards per play with eight three-and-outs.

Moore led the defensive effort for Denison with 14 total tackles and matched Clay Denstorff with five quarterback hurries while Layton Reesor added seven tackles and three tackles for loss. In addition, safety Collin Murphy had five tackles and three pass breakups.

In all, Fabrocini rushed 30 times for 154 yards while bringing his season rushing touchdown total to 17, three short of the single-season record (20) that he set just least season. Fabrocini also added three catches for 36 yards and a score while Aiello led the Denison wide receiver corps with five catches for 84 yards.

Denison finishes 4-1 on the road for the second season in a row and will now host Ohio Wesleyan University for Senior Day at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 11.
