GRANVILLE, Ohio (November 29, 2023) – The Denison University women's basketball team fell 77-64 at home in nonconference action against Capital University on Wednesday night.
Denison came out firing with a 3-pointer from
Brooke Toigo on the first possession of the game, and then a three from
Maddie Goodman three minutes in made it 8-6 Big Red, but that would be the last time Denison would lead as Capital connected on three triples in the first five minutes of the game to take a 15-10 advantage.
Both teams finished 3-for-6 from three in the opening quarter, but it was the Comets who led 25-17 after shooting 47.1 percent (8-17) from the field and making all six of its free throw attempts.
In the second quarter, however, both teams shot below 30 percent with a combined nine made field goals and four 3-pointers.
Down by 10 (37-27) at the break, Denison got to within four (39-35) after 3-pointers by
Ada Taute and
Abby Cooch bookended an 8-0 Big Red run in the first minute and a half of the third quarter.
Unfortunately, Capital proceeded to finish 8-for-14 from the field (57.1 percent) and 3-for-4 (75 percent) from three in the period to take a 15-point lead (58-43) into the fourth quarter. In addition, Samaree Perkins added seven more rebounds to her total in the third quarter before finishing with 15 for the game. In the end, the Comets outrebounded the Big Red 49-30.
The Big Red also could not contain Capital's Laney Murphy, who was 5-for-8 from three and poured in 23 points.
Denison was led by Cooch with 13 points and Toigo with 12. Both players made three 3-pointers. As a team, the Big Red made a season-high 11 3-pointers as six players connected on at least one triple.
Taute added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists while
Abigail Westmeyer scored seven points and led the Big Red with eight boards.
The Big Red suffered what was just their second loss of the season in six games (4-2) while Capital, which had already defeated two North Coast Athletic Conference teams this season, Kenyon College (64-48) and the College of Wooster (78-53), improved to 3-2 overall.
Next up, Denison will travel to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Saturday, December 2. The Tartans hosted Capital on November 18 of this season and battled to a close five-point win (81-76).
