CHICAGO, Ill. (November 12, 2023) – The Denison University women's basketball team dropped a 85-69 decision to the tournament hosts and No. 22 nationally-ranked University of Chicago in its final game of the Midway Classic on Sunday inside the Ratner Athletics Center.
It was Denison's first-ever meeting against Chicago, which limited the Big Red to just nine points in the first quarter and scored more points in the first quarter (27) than Denison did in the first half (25).
Chicago shot 11-for-13 (84.6 percent) in the opening quarter compared to just 3-for-14 (21.4 percent) shooting for Denison.
The Big Red did, however, outscore the Maroons by three (21-18) in the third quarter and by five (23-18) in the fourth while shooting 5-for-9 from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes. Chicago was only 3-for-15 (20 percent) from three for the game after shooting 17-for-46 (37 percent) from long range during its first two games of the season.
Abby Cooch scored a team-high 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 shooting from three while
Ada Taute was next with 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
It was a battle of two 2-0 teams as the Big Red suffered their first loss of the season while the Maroons remained undefeated.
Denison will be back in action next Sunday (Nov. 19) at 1 p.m. at Alfred College in New York.
