DU falls in straight sets at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio (October 18, 2023) – Oberlin College handed Denison University a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) defeat on Wednesday night inside Philips Gymnasium. The Yeowomen got 25 assists and six service aces from Taylor Gwynne and 12 digs and four aces from the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week Iris Archibald en route to the straight-sets win.

Denison (9-11 overall, 2-2 NCAC) trailed by scores of 6-2 and 10-5 after back-to-back services aces and an assisted block by the Yeowomen in the first set, and never got closer than to within three the rest of the way.

Oberlin (12-4, 3-2) then opened up the second set with a 5-0 lead after four service aces by Gwynne. A kill by Emma Goss got Denison to within one at 17-16 before a 3-0 run for the Yeowomen beginning with a Big Red service error and ending with a Denison attack error.

After both teams hit below .100 percent in the first set and hit above .200 in the second set, Oberlin hit .357 percent (13 kills; 3 errors) in the final set while finishing with at least four aces in all three sets.

Back-to-back aces by Archibald doubled up the Big Red at 18-9 in the third set before an assist by Gwynne on a kill by Cami Sweet made it a 10-point margin (19-9).

For Denison, Claire Hamilton reached double digits in kills for the eighth time in her last nine matches as she led all players with 11 kills.

Fellow-freshman Ayla Dunbar with next with seven kills, her most since the second week of the season, all while hitting .500 percent on 14 attempts.

On Saturday, October 21, Denison will compete in the Ohio Wesleyan Tri-Match, taking on the hosts from OWU at 12 p.m. before battling Hanover College in nonconference action in the very next match. The Battling Bishops currently lead the NCAC standings with a 17-4 overall record and a 4-0 conference mark.
