Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey falls to No. 6 CNU

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (October 15, 2023) – In its first game of back-to-back games on back-to-back days in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Denison University field hockey team fell 5-0 in neutral-site action against No. 6 nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday.

The Big Red gave up two goals to CNU's Lindsey Loar in the first quarter and two goals to Emily Evans in the second.

Denison's only shots were an attempt by Abigail Hano that was blocked in the 34th minute, and a shot by Emma Gebhart that was saved one minute and 14 seconds later.

The 39 shots allowed by the Big Red were the most since allowing 42 attempts in a 3-0 loss vs. the University of Lynchburg on September 5, 2010, while the 32 shots on goal were the most Denison has allowed during that span. In addition, Athena Joannou's 26 saves were by far the most by a Big Red goalkeeper during that span.

Denison (8-4 overall) falls to 0-4 all-time against CNU (13-0), which has only allowed six goals all season long and is 4-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. CNU is also one of the hottest teams in the country, putting together the second-longest active winning streak in all of collegiate field hockey, which trails only No. 1 Middlebury's 20-game run dating back to last year.

Not only did Sunday's performance extend CNU's winning streak, but it also continued an incredible stretch by the nation's fifth-ranked scoring offense. The Captains have deposited at least two goals in all 13 games this season while collecting three or more in seven consecutive outings. Both of those streaks rank second in the NCAA.

Denison will finish up its trip to Fredericksburg, Virginia, tomorrow as the Big Red take on the hosts from the University of Mary Washington at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 16.
