Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey shuts out UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (October 16, 2023) – Freshman Emma Gebhart scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the first quarter while sophomore Rachel Gilio scored her first-career goal on the her second-career shot in the second quarter, sending the Denison University field hockey team to a 2-0 road win over the University of Mary Washington on Monday morning at UMW's Battleground Turf Field.

It was the first-ever matchup between Denison (9-4 overall) and Mary Washington (8-7) as a beautiful assist from way outside by Kate Hinshaw found Gebhart to get the Big Red on the board in the 11th minute.

Then in the 26th minute, a penalty corner by Hinshaw went to Gilio, whose ensuing shot deflected off the body of the keeper and just snuck in past a diving defender.

With two assists on the day, Hinshaw now leads the Big Red with four assists on the season while Lila Smith, who added an assist on the first goal of the game by Gebhart, increased her point total as a freshman to 11 (4 goals; 3 assists), the second most on the team this year.

Denison was outshot 5-4 in the first half but led 3-2 in shots on goal after a pair of saves by Athena Joannou.

Denison then had just one shot in the second half, but the defensive effort from the Big Red was fantastic, including the midfielders, who routinely stepped up to prevent easy passes and goal-scoring opportunities for the Eagles.

In addition to Joannou (5 saves), earning a shout out for their standout performances on the back line were seniors Cary Mauck and Grace Lock.

Next up, Denison's Senior Day and final home game of the regular season will be against Earlham College at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
