Big Red take down Owls

GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 7, 2023) – The Denison University men's basketball team connected on nine 3-pointers, shot 65.22 percent from the field in the second half and saw 11 players enter the scoring column en route to an 82-61 victory over Kenyon College on Saturday at Livingston Gymnasium. In addition, six different players connected on at least one 3-pointer for the Big Red.

Darren Rubin led all scorers with a season-high of 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field while Scotty Dean scored 11 points on a trio of 3-pointers and Ricky Radtke added 10 points.

Dre Rodgers finished with a game-high seven rebounds and made a big impact early on in the game with seven early points before a 3-pointer from the corner by Gates Flynn made it 26-13 Big Red 10 minutes in.

That was Denison's fourth 3-pointer in the first 10 minutes of the contest, but despite shooting 41.7 percent from the field in the first half, but Big Red found themselves ahead by only eight points (39-31) entering the final 20 minutes.

After going over 16 minutes between 3-point makes, the Big Red went ahead by 16 points (57-41) thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by Dean with 13:14 to go in the game.

In all, Denison converted on 12 of their first 17 field goal attempts (70.6 percent) of the second half to go ahead 71-49 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Rubin and Dean with 6:25 left to play.

Dean then added a pair of free throws to cap what was a 12-0 run for the Big Red to make it 73-49 with under five minutes on the clock.

With the win, Denison improved to above .500 both overall (7-6) and in the North Coast Athletic Conference (3-2) while Kenyon, which saw three of its previous four losses in conference action be decided by less than five points, fell to 7-7 and 0-5.

Next up, Denison will look to wrap up its three-game homestand with a third straight win as the Big Red welcome Ohio Wesleyan University into Livingston Gymnasium at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11.
