Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big Red unable to keep up with DePauw

GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 11, 2023) – The Denison University women's basketball team suffered a 56-41 loss against DePauw University on Wednesday night at Livingston Gymnasium. The Tigers scored at least 15 points in each of the first three quarters while limiting the Big Red to single digits and only three made field goals in the second and third quarters.

The Big Red started the game only 3-for-13 from the field, but got a midrange jumper and a 3-pointer from Maddie Goodman on their final two possessions of the first quarter to trail by one five (17-12) after the opening 10 minutes.

Denison then opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer from the corner by Molly Fisher on the first possession of the period to make it only a two-point game at 17-15.

However, after an and-one by Mikaila Carpenter made it a three-point deficit at 21-18 with 7:43 left in the second quarter, DePauw rattled off 12 straight points to go ahead 33-18 with four and a half minutes remaining until halftime.

The Big Red finished the second quarter with only three made field goals and committed their first three turnovers of the game during the big 12-0 run, leading to six points off turnovers for the Tigers, who outrebounded Denison 12-1 on the offensive glass in the first half and led the game 13-0 on second chance points. The Big Red defense, however, did limit DePauw to only one make on nine field goal attempts in the final four minutes of the first half.

Denison then got off to a rough 1-for-8 start from the field in the third quarter until a midrange jumper by Hannah Wynn followed by a 3-pointer by Gabby Elliott on back-to-back Big Red possessions made the score 43-29 in favor of the Tigers with three minutes left in the period.

Unfortunately, DePauw scored the final seven points of the third quarter, the first two of which came via another offensive rebound to give the visiting team a 20-2 advantage on second chance points. In all, the Big Red were limited to just three made field goals for the second quarter in a row while the Tigers took control of the game and went into the final period with a 21-point lead (50-29).

Denison was led by Fisher and Wynn with eight points apiece while Goodman added seven points and both Abigail Westmeyer and Carpenter finished with six points. Westmeyer also added a team-high nine rebounds.

Denison falls to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while DePauw, which suffered its first loss in the NCAC in 39 games at Wittenberg University last time out, a streak lasting since January 23, 2019, improved to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC.

Next up, Denison, which is seeking its first conference win of the season, will travel north to take on Hiram College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 14.
