WESTERVILLE, Ohio (September 28, 2022) – The final nonconference match of the 2022 regular season for the Denison University men's soccer team saw the Big Red fall on the road for the first time this year as they lost 3-0 at Otterbein University on Wednesday night.
Something had to give in this battle of two NCAA Tournament teams from last year as the Big Red entered the match undefeated on the road at 3-0-1 while the Cardinals were a perfect 4-0 at home.
Denison was held to without a shot in the first half while Otterbein had four shots in the opening 45 minutes, including one that had to be saved by
Tommy Prokos less than 30 seconds before halftime.
Then after the two teams returned from the halftime break, the Cardinals got on the board just over eight minutes in and proceeded to add two more goals over the next three and a half minutes to stun the Big Red.
After the three goals by three different players, the Big Red defense would allow only two more shots by the Cardinals the rest of the night.
However, Denison would not get its first shot attempt of the match until the 73rd minute when back-to-back shots by
Rohan Tripathy and
Chris Giglio were both blocked.
Tripathy then added a shot that was saved in the 83rd minute while a shot by
Ethan Miracle in the 86th minute resulted in the third block of the half of the Otterbein defense. Lastly, the final shot attempt of the night by
Henry Schwartz missed wide left.
Head Coach
Brandon Bianco said afterwards, "Obviously not the result we wanted this evening. Otterbein was active in their attacking third and made us pay for some bad mistakes. We didn't compete up to the standard we expect of ourselves, and I know we'll make some corrections to get ready for Saturday."
Denison, which has not defeated Otterbein since 2013 (0-4-1 since 2017), fell to 5-2-2 on the season while the Cardinals improved to 6-1 overall with their third shutout of the season.
Denison will kick off North Coast Athletic Conference action on the road this weekend as the Big Red travel to Wittenberg University for a 5 p.m. start on Saturday, October 1.
