Big Red battle Thunder to 2-2 tie

ANGOLA, Ind. (September 24, 2022) – A pair of second-half goals by Caroline Garrard and Avery Butler snapped the Denison University women's soccer team's six-match scoreless streak and helped send the Big Red to a 2-2 tie on the road at Trine University on Saturday.

Last season, Denison fell 3-2 at home in its first ever matchup with Trine after a hat trick by freshman forward Teresa Ashbrook. On that day, Ashbrook would be responsible for all five of the Thunder's shots in the match, but this time around, she had some help.

The first shot of the match was wide right by Denison's Maddie Reap less than three minutes in while the first shot on goal of the match came off the foot of Amy Chiero in the 13th minute before being saved by the Trine goalkeeper Sophie Aschemeier.

Starting with a pair of saves by Wynne Hague at the end of the 13th minute and then in the 17th minute, Trine was responsible for seven of the next eight shots as Ashbrook assisted on the first goal of the match in the 29th minute.

A pair of shots by Callie Davis in the 38th and 53rd minutes were both saved by Aschemeier, but less than four minutes later, Garrard found the back of the net for the first Denison goal since their season opener back on September 2.

After entering the match to start the second half, goalkeeper Molly Noga made her lone save of the match in the 78th minute to keep the score tied and set the stage for the go-ahead goal, which came thanks to Butler only one minute later.

Unfortunately, a goal by Trine's Olivia Butterworth with only five minutes left finished off the draw.

As you would expect in a draw, it was a pretty even match statistically as Trine outshot Denison 11-10 while it was the Big Red who held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Additionally, Aschemeier finished with four saves for the Thunder while Denison's goalkeepers combined for three saves.

Denison is now 0-6-2 on the year while Trine, which was receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll for the first time in program history this week and entered the matchup with the Big Red 2-0 at home, is now 4-3-1 overall.

It won't get any easier for the Big Red as they travel to No. 15 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University for a 7:30 p.m. showdown on Tuesday, September 27, in Cleveland, Ohio.
