Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Strong second half propels Big Red to 2-1 victory over Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio (September 13, 2022) – A pair of second-half goals by Ethan Miracle and Michael Sullivan were enough to propel the Denison University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win on the road over Capital University on Tuesday night.

Down 1-0 at halftime, the Big Red wasted very little time getting on the board in the second half as just one minute in, a great pass to the corner was tracked by Jake Krueger, who turned on the jets to chase down the ball. Krueger then crossed the ball past Capital goalkeeper Connor Sexton and two defensemen to the right foot of Miracle, who set the ball into the bottom right of the net to tie it and notch his fifth goal of the season in five matches.

Later on in the second half, after a free kick for the Big Red got the ball downfield, Niko Argyros juked out his defender in the box and found Sullivan just outside the box where he stroked it right through the goalie's legs to find the back of the net and give Denison a 2-1 advantage early in the 76th minute.

The Denison defense held stern while the offense controlled the ball for the final ten minutes to help secure the victory. With the win, Denison makes it two in a row to improve 3-0-2 while Capital falls to 1-3 on the young season.

"It was another match where we had to dig ourselves out a bit," said Head Coach Brandon Bianco. "We still need to manage matches better, but we again showed some character to pick up a road win tonight. We'll look at a few things and make some adjustments as we move forward."

Following last season's 4-1 win at home over a Capital team that was ranked seventh in the country at the time, Denison has now made it two wins in a row over their rivals from Bexley, Ohio.

The Big Red outshot the Comets 19-14 for the match and 10-1 in the second half with both teams producing six shots on goal.

The first shot of the match came early as Miracle fired one just above the net just fifty seconds in. The Big Red defense held the Comets to only one shot in the first ten minutes that was promptly saved by the goalkeeper Tommy Prokos.

After a great pass from Ben Goeller found the foot of Krueger 18th minute, Denison got an opportunity to score, but Sexton made the save to set up an ensuing corner kick for the Big Red.

The Comets fired a pair of shots in the 21st minute that were saved by Prokos and then blocked by the Big Red defense, respectively.

A penalty kick in the 28th minute by Capital's Jack Francisco was saved initially by Prokos, however off the rebound Francisco finished in the bottom left of the goal to give Capital the 1-0 advantage.

Krueger would finish with five shots for the Big Red and put three of them on target while Prokos finished with a new career-best of five saves.

Next up for Denison will be a home matchup against Marietta College at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 16. The Big Red have won five in a row against the Pioneers since 2014, all five of which have come by only a one-goal margin.
