HOLLAND, Mich. (September 11, 2022) – The final two matches of the MIAA/NCAC Crossover saw the Denison University volleyball team fall 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-11) against No. 3 nationally-ranked Calvin University in the morning before dropping a tough five-set decision, 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 15-7), to Albion College in the afternoon.
Match 1 (Denison 0, No. 3 Calvin 3):
- Against Calvin, Denison stayed competitive in the first set and was down only 22-19 after a kill by Cailey Johns, but a Big Red set error brought up set point before a Big Red attack error ended it.
- Lucy Anderson finished with seven kills and Johns had five kills while Jenna Corrao had 16 digs against the Knights.
Match 2 (Denison 2, Albion 3):
- Then, the matchup between Denison and Albion was a battle between two teams receiving votes in the first AVCA Coaches' Poll of the season, and it resulted in Denison's fourth five-set match in its first seven matches so far this season.
- Anderson again led Denison in kills, this time with 15, and was joined in double figures by Sophia Sobota with 13 and Natalie Hutras and Johns both with 10.
- Anderson also added three services aces and four blocks against the Britons while Kirby MacKinnon finished with 14 assists and Corrao had 19 digs.
- Hutras and MacKinnon added 15 and 13 digs, respectively, as both recorded their third double-doubles of the season, and freshman Alice Kempf reached a career-high in digs with 13 as well.
Next Up: Next up, Denison will play at Earlham College beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, in Richmond, Indiana, before heading back into tournament action at the Ohio Northern University Invitational on Friday, September 16, and Saturday, September 17.
