Lippman tosses complete game shutout against No. 7 Salisbury to send No. 13 Denison to Regional Championship

GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 22, 2022) – After throwing a complete game and striking out 14 Wooster hitters to deliver the Denison University baseball team its third straight North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship last Sunday, senior Kenny Lippman was up to his old tricks again on this Sunday as he tossed a complete game shutout and struck out 13 hitters in a 2-0 win for the No. 13 Big Red against defending NCAA Division III National Champion and No. 7-ranked Salisbury University.

With the win, Denison improved to 2-0 in the NCAA Division III Regional Baseball Tournament, and will now advance to the Regional Championship game on Monday with a trip to the Super Regional on the line.

Lippman (7-1) did a great job of getting in front of guys and working quickly all afternoon long as he struck out the side in the top of the first and then had a 1-2-3 top of the second inning.

Lippman then threw his second 1-2-3 inning of the game in the fourth and racked up eight strikeouts to that point.

In the top of the fifth, Lippman was aided by a great diving catch by center fielder Eric Colaco in the right center gap for the second out of another 1-2-3 inning.

Lippman allowed only one hit through the first six innings, and then struck out the side for the second time in the seventh inning, giving him 12 punch outs.

In the top of the eighth inning, Salisbury hit a leadoff single for the second inning a row, its third inning in a row getting the leadoff man on base, but a lineout double play to Dylan Hunter at first base quickly erased the threat.

Lippman racked up 70 pitches through five innings, 90 pitches after six, 111 pitches after seven, 119 after eight, and 135 for the game. He finished with a three-hitter to his credit and allowed only one walk as well.

Offensively for Denison, Hunter hit a one-out triple to right center field in the first inning and was unable to score, but the Big Red capitalized in the second inning as a leadoff single by Jake Welsch and an error on a sacrifice bunt by Charlie Glennon put two runners on base and setup a big two-out, two-run single to right center field by Owen Wilson to give Denison an early 2-0 advantage.

Then after a two-out single down the right field line by Ari Fierer in the bottom of the third inning, Denison was held hitless the rest of the way, but was able to hold onto the win as Lippman kept the Sea Gulls off the scoreboard.

Wilson finished 1-for-1 with two RBI's and two walks for the Big Red, who stranded a chance for some insurance runs with two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth. Fortunately, Lippman got his fourth 1-2-3 inning of the game in the top of the ninth to end it.

Next up, Denison (35-9) will have a rematch against Salisbury (32-9) in the regional championship game. The Big Red and the Sea Gulls will square off beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 23, and it will take only one win from Denison to claim its first regional title in program history.
