Women’s lacrosse concludes regular season with win over Wooster on Senior Day

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 30, 2022) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2022 regular season with a 21-9 win over the College of Wooster on Senior Day inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

It was Senior Day for No. 3 Casey McTague, No. 23 Isabelle Brocato, No. 27 Delia Crotty and No. 35 Maeve Caldwell, each of whom started the game and helped play a role in the win, but it will not be their final time playing on their home field as Denison its set to host its conference semifinal matchup next week.

Mctague scored the first goal of the game for Denison on the assist by Crotty, who then scored the Big Red's second goal. Meanwhile, Brocato (defender) and Caldwell (goalkeeper) kept the Fighting Scots off the scoreboard for the final five minutes of the first quarter and helped the Big Red to a 6-3 lead after the quarter as McTague scored her second goal of the opening period to cap a 3-0 Big Red run with two minutes remaining.

McTague would score again in the second quarter to reach her 10th hat trick of the season; and then in the third quarter, Denison rattled off six straight goals, including back-to-back goals by junior Abby Van Metre and back-to-back scores by McTague while the defense shut out Wooster in the quarter to give Denison a nine-point lead (16-7). Sophomore Ashley Viglione scored her third goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to make it a 7-0 run to start the second half for Denison.

It was her fourth game this season with five or more goals. For her career, McTague has started in 50 of the 52 games, and has amassed 147 goals, 14 assists, 95 groundballs, 57 caused turnovers and 177 draw controls. In addition to scoring at least two goals in every game but one this season and leading the Big Red in goals, points and groundballs, McTague recently tied the Big Red's record for goals in a single game with nine goals at Wittenberg earlier this season. In 2021, McTague was named an IWLCA Second-Team All-American, was a CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-American, and was the NCAC Midfielder of the Year.

Crotty would finish her Senior Day with one goal and two assists to reach three points in one game for the second time as a senior. Crotty has now played in 27 career games and has totaled six goals, five assists, 12 groundballs and two caused turnovers. After scoring her first career goal against Wittenberg last season, Crotty scored her first career hat trick and set a new career-high with four points at Wittenberg earlier this season.

Brocato would record three groundballs and one caused turnover on defense on Saturday. She has started in 28 of 45 games in her career, including starting in all 15 games as a senior. She has recorded 35 groundballs and 27 caused turnovers in her career, including career-highs of 18 groundballs and 16 caused turnovers this season.

The final senior, Caldwell, finished with six saves and improved to 7-4 on the season. She has appeared in 39 career games, has made 147 career saves, and is 14-7 overall.

Behind McTague in the scoring column was sophomore Josie Lucchesi, who scored a career-high four goals for the second game in a row while Viglione matched her with four points (3 goals, 1 assist).

For Van Metre, her back-to-back goals in the third quarter marked the first multi-goal performance of her career so far.

In the final five minutes of the game, sophomore Merrill Rollhaus would score her first career goal before fellow-sophomore Claire Simonds recorded her first goal of the season to cap off the scoring.

Another sophomore, Ana Ortiz DeRosa, would finish with a career-high 11 draw controls while junior Grace Hanson had a career-high four caused turnovers.

Saturday's game started as a matchup between the second- and third-place teams in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. With the win, Denison (10-5 overall, 6-1 NCAC) reaches the 10-win mark overall for the 11th full season in a row, including all eight full seasons under the leadership of Head Coach Amanda Daniels. Additionally, it was Denison's 11th win in a row against Wooster (13-4, 4-3), and was its 17th win in the last 18 meetings against the Fighting Scots.

Next up, second-seeded Denison will host the NCAC Tournament Semifinals at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4. Their opponent will be third-seeded DePauw University (11-3, 3-2), who only played five conference games this season and fell 17-7 at home to the Big Red on April 20.
