GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 4, 2022) – The second-seeded Denison University women's lacrosse team advanced to the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship game following a 15-10 defeat of third-seeded DePauw University in the conference semifinals on Wednesday in Granville.
After DePauw scored first two minutes into the game, Denison scored seven straight goals by seven different players to take control before the Tigers added a goal with only eight seconds left in the first quarter to make it 7-2.
DePauw got to within three at 9-6 in the second quarter before a goal by
Josie Lucchesi with 22 seconds left before halftime made it 10-6, and then that would be the start of a 5-0 Big Red run as they outscored the Tigers 4-0 in the third period.
Denison was led by three goals and four assists by
Ashley Viglione, three goals by
Casey McTague, and two goals and one assist by Lucchesi.
Additionally,
Maddie Morrell and
Jane Lukens also scored twice while
Ryann Yospa and
Anna Devuono both had one goal and one assist.
Defensively,
Brooksey Perrin Hee finished with four groundballs and three caused turnovers while goalkeeper
Caroline O'Dea allowed only six goals and made 10 saves in her 45 minutes of action, which included the entire second half after earning the start as well.
Denison, which improved to 11-5 overall on the season, is now 10-0 all-time against DePauw since the Tigers began playing in 2013. DePauw, meanwhile, which was playing in only its second game since a 17-7 loss at home vs. Denison on April 20 and was making its first ever NCAC Tournament appearance, saw its season end at 11-4.
The Big Red will advance to Saturday's (May 7) NCAC Tournament Championship where they will play at No. 1-seeded Kenyon College at 1 p.m. in Gambier. The Ladies defeated fourth-seeded Wooster 20-8 on Wednesday in the other semifinal matchup.
It will be Denison's 10th appearance in the last 11 NCAC Tournament Championship games as the Big Red seek their eighth straight conference tournament title.
