GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 3, 2022) – Only one day after sweeping its first North Coast Athletic Conference series of the season against Kenyon College, the Denison University softball team returned to the diamond for nonconference action against Heidelberg University. After losing game one 14-9, the Big Red lost 12-6 in game two on Sunday at the Denison Softball Field.
Game 1 (Denison 9, Heidelberg 14):
- After three runs all on two outs for Heidelberg in the top of the first inning, Denison batted around in the bottom half and put up five unearned runs on three hits and three errors.
- In the bottom of the second, Maggie Ballentine had her second hit of the game with a double down the left field line, and she later scored her second run as the Big Red doubled up the score at 6-3.
- After Heidelberg put up four runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning to take back the lead at 7-6, Claire Powell led off the bottom half of the inning with a bunt single and scored two batters later to tie the game on a single to center field by Jessica Hopkins.
- Unfortunately, Heidelberg exploded in the top of the sixth with four straight hits to start the inning en route to finishing with five runs on six hits overall to take the lead for good.
- In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Annabelle Calderon led off with her sixth home run of the season with a shot to center field, and then Caitlin Ellwanger followed with a double to left center before scoring on a single by Jacqui Abogado.
Â
Game 2 (Denison 6, Heidelberg 12):
- Heidelberg put together its biggest inning of the day in the top of the second, loading the bases three times and scoring 11 runs with one grand slam.
- Denison, meanwhile, got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as a one-out double to left center field by Powell was followed by an RBI-single to right center by Ballentine.
- Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Big Red were able to keep the game going with a two-run home run to right field by Hopkins and a three-run homer down the left field line by Abogado.
- Unfortunately, after a walk by Clara Wolff after the home run by Abogado, seven straight outs by the Denison offense against the new Heidelberg pitcher was all she wrote.
Â
Records:
- Denison fell to 11-10 while Heidelberg improved to 12-8.
