OBERLIN, Ohio (April 10, 2022) – The Denison University softball team played on the road in North Coast Athletic Conference action for the first time so far this season, and in the end, the Big Red split their series at Oberlin College, winning 10-4 in game one before losing 11-6 in game number two on Sunday.
Â
Game 1 (Denison 10, Oberlin 4):
- The Big Red's four-run top of the fourth inning featured four hits in a row with one out and started with a solo home run by Caitlin Ellwanger before Sam Kline singled up the middle, Jacqui Abogado doubled to right center and Clara Wolff followed with a three-run homer.
- Then in the top of the sixth, Denison put the game out of reach by sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on eight hits.
- It began with three straight singles by Abogado, Wolff and pinch hitter Abby Arabia before three straight RBI-hits via a two-run single to right center by Maggie Ballentine, a two-run double to left center by Jessica Hopkins, and another RBI-double to left center, this time by Annabelle Calderon.Â
- The Big Red then batted around as Abogado hit her second single of the inning and brought in the sixth run of the inning.
- Abogado finished the game 4-for-4 while Wolff was 2-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored.
- Sydney Silverstein (6-4) pitched the first 5.1 innings to earn the win before Sophia Parpala finished off the final 1.2 innings allowing one hit, one walk and no runs.
Â
Game 2 (Denison 6, Oberlin 11):
- Denison fell behind 3-0 after a three-run home run for Oberlin in the bottom of the first inning, and then down 5-0 in the top of the third, the Big Red loaded the bases with a two-out rally before coming up empty on a groundout.
- Then a pair of two-out RBI-singles for the Yeowomen made it 7-0 in the bottom of the third before a two-out solo home run made it 8-0 in the fourth.
- After back-to-back singles by Claire Powell and Ballentine to lead off the fifth inning followed by a walk to Hopkins to load the bases, Calderon cut the Big Red's deficit in half with one big of the bat as she belted a grand slam to make it 8-4 with nobody out.
- Denison then cut the margin from four down to only two as Ellwanger followed Calderon's grand slam with a walk before Abogado hit a two-run home run two batters later to make it 8-6.
- Unfortunately, the Yeowomen added another run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth to give themselves enough breathing room to earn their second win over the Big Red since 2019.
- Abogado would finish a combined 6-for-8 with three RBI's and three runs scored on the day while Wolff was a combined 4-for-8 with three RBI's and two runs.
Â
Records:
- Denison's record moved to 12-11 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC while Oberlin picked up its first conference win of the season at 7-15-1 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC.
