WESTERVILLE, Ohio (April 12, 2022) – The Denison University softball team took a break from North Coast Athletic Conference action to take on nearby Otterbein University in a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday. However, the Big Red lost 6-2 in game one before losing 9-1 in five innings in game two.
Â
Game 1 (Denison 2, Otterbein 6):
- Otterbein led 2-0 after a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the second inning and kept Denison off the scoreboard until a two-out RBI-single to shortstop of Abby Arabia in the top of the fourth scored Annabelle Calderon to make it 2-1.
- Unfortunately, the Cardinals answered Denison's run with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after back-to-back two-out run-scoring singles and then a bases loaded RBI-walk.
- Calderon finished 2-for-4 for the Big Red as did Jessica Hopkins, who came up with an RBI-single in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
Game 2 (Denison 1, Otterbein 9):
- Otterbein scored six runs on seven hits in the bottom of a third inning that featured two RBI-triples to right field, a run on a passed ball, and four unearned runs overall.
- Denison got on the board in the top of the fourth with a leadoff solo home run to left center field by Calderon, her eighth home run as a freshman and her seventh in the last 11 games.
- However, three straight RBI's by the Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth brought the eight-run rule into play, and despite getting a runner to third base in the top of the fifth, Denison was unable to keep the game going.
Â
Records:
- Denison's record fell to 12-13 overall on the season while Otterbein improved to 18-6 and remained unbeaten at home at 8-0.
Â
Next Up: Denison will return to NCAC action at Hiram College starting at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. Then, a tough matchup at home against No. 9 nationally-ranked DePauw University looms on Saturday, April 16, as the Big Red wrap up a stretch of three doubleheaders within a five-day span.
