Softball sweeps Kenyon in NCAC opener

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 2, 2022) – The start of North Coast Athletic Conference action for the Denison University softball team saw the Big Red host Kenyon College on Saturday. In the end, Denison won game one 10-2 in five innings before winning 15-10 in a high-scoring game two to earn its third sweep in a row and stretch its current winning streak to seven games.
 
Game 1 (Denison 10, Kenyon 2):
  • The Big Red belted out 13 hits in game one as everyone in the lineup had at least one hit and one run scored.
  • Down 2-0 after a two-out, two-run double to center field by Kenyon in the top of the second, the big inning for Denison was a four-run bottom of the third that featured a two-out rally for the Big Red. Three straight singles by Claire Powell, Maggie Ballentine and Jessica Hopkins got Denison on the scoreboard, and then the big blast was a three-run home run to center field by Annabelle Calderon to put the Big Red up for good at 4-2.
  • It was the fourth straight game with a home run for Calderon, who now has five long balls as a freshman.
  • Another Denison rookie, Sydney Silverstein, improved to 5-4 after pitching the fifth complete game of her freshman season. Silverstein tossed five innings allowing six hits, two total runs and no earned runs. She also walked two and struck out three.
 
Game 2 (Denison 15, Kenyon 10):
  • In a game that featured 25 combined runs, 35 combined hits and four total home runs, Denison had a season-high 20 hits as a team.
  • Powell was 4-for-5 from the leadoff spot, and Ballentine, Hopkins and Calderon were each 3-for-4 as well.
  • Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Powell led off with a triple to left field and then scored on the ensuing single by Ballentine. Hopkins followed immediately with a home run to left field to make it 3-1 Big Red.
  • Hopkins added a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth before a two-run single by Caitlin Ellwanger, and then Denison's second three-run homer of the day, this time to left center field by Clara Wolff, capped a seven-run inning that made it 11-3.
  • After a home run and five runs for Kenyon in the top of the fifth, Ballentine would hit Denison's third homer of the game to left in the in the bottom half before a sacrifice fly by Ellwanger and a double to left center by Sam Kline made it 14-8.
  • Ballentine then added her third RBI of the game with a single to center field to score the final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Records:
  • Denison improved to 11-8 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC with its fifth straight series sweep over Kenyon (15-7, 0-2) since 2016.
 
Next Up: Denison will Heidelberg University tomorrow, Sunday, April 3, in nonconference action starting at 1 p.m. on the Denison Softball Field.
