SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (April 13, 2022) – After suffering its first loss in North Coast Athletic Conference action since the 2015 season last weekend, the No. 24 nationally-ranked Denison University women's lacrosse team got back to its winning ways with a 26-5 victory on the road over Wittenberg University on Wednesday evening.
After scoring four goals in the first quarter alone, Denison senior
Casey McTague finished with nine goals, tying the Big Red single-game record set by Lauren Peace on April 12, 2000, also against Wittenberg.
McTague's first two goals were the start of a 6-0 Big Red run to end the first quarter after the Tigers took a 1-0 lead two minutes into the game.
Additionally, Denison's 26 goals as a team were only one off the program record of 27 goals set on March 31, 1996, vs. Earlham.
Behind McTague in the scoring column was freshman
Maddie Van Slyke, who recorded her first career hat trick with three goals while senior
Delia Crotty scored her first three goals of the season and set a new career-high in both goals (3) and points (4).
Ryann Yospa added two goals and two assists while sophomore
Jane Lukens had her first career two-goal performance.
Lastly,
Jane Bailey and
Allaire Kotz both finished with one goal and two assists while
Annie Rau led Denison with five caused turnovers.
Caroline O'Dea (30 minutes),
Maeve Caldwell (15 minutes) and
Audrey Hughes (15 minutes) all split time in goal and each made one save as the Tigers finished with only eight shots on goal.
Denison improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC with the win, which was also its ninth straight win against Wittenberg since 2016. The Tigers, meanwhile, dropped to 5-8 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Next up, the Big Red will then return home to host Oberlin College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16.
