GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 5, 2022) – In what turned out to be the 2022 home opener for the No. 13 Denison University women's lacrosse team, the Big Red led 8-5 at halftime before falling by a final score of 15-11 against No. 16 SUNY Brockport on Saturday at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
After falling behind 2-0 to start the game, the Big Red rallied with four goals in each of the first two quarters to take a three-goal lead at the break.
Casey McTague scored twice in the first half while
Allaire Kotz scored each of Denison's final three goals of the opening 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, Brockport scored the first two goals of the second half within a minute of each other to get back to within one, and then after
Abby Van Metre scored to make it 10-8 Big Red with 10 and a half minutes still to go in the third quarter, it was nearly all Golden Eagles from there.
Brockport scored each of the final four goals of the third quarter to turn a two-goal deficit into a two-goal lead.
Then after McTague notched her fourth goal of the game only nine seconds into the fourth quarter after winning the draw control and charging down the field to get Denison back to within one at 12-11, the Golden Eagles answered with two goals in the next minute and a half. The Big Red, meanwhile, missed each of their final seven shots of the game, five of which resulted in saves by the Brockport goalkeeper Morgan Elmer.
McTague finished with at least three goals for the third game in a row to open the season while
Jane Bailey (1 goal, 2 assists) had at least three points for the third straight game and matched
Ashley Viglione with two assists.
McTague also led the way with seven draw controls while
Brooksey Perrin Hee and
Mary Daniel both had three caused turnovers.
Denison falls to 1-2 on the season and 0-6 all-time against SUNY Brockport (1-0), which was playing in its season opener after each of its previous two games were postponed.
The Big Red will now turn their attention to their Spring Break trip to Haines City, Florida, and the Feltrim Sports Complex starting on Monday, March 14 against the University of Lynchburg at 11 a.m.
