No. 19 women’s lacrosse wins first game of Spring Break trip to Florida

HAINES CITY, Fla. (March 14, 2022) – The No. 19 Denison University women's lacrosse team started off its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 13-9 win over the University of Lynchburg on Monday at the Feltrim Sports Village.

The Big Red wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard just 13 seconds in on a goal by Jane Bailey, but from there it was a pretty even first half with the scoring being knotted up at 5-5 before a goal by Casey McTague in the final minute before halftime made it 6-5 Denison at the break.

In the second half, Denison went ahead 8-6 on back-to-back goals only 20 seconds apart by Josie Lucchesi and Bailey before Lynchburg tied it at 8-8 with 7:55 left in the third quarter.

From there, however, Denison began to separate itself from Lynchburg will three straight goals to end the third quarter, all on free position shots. Ana Ortiz DeRosa scored only 45 seconds after Lynchburg tied it, and then McTague scored her third goal of the game 35 seconds later to make it 10-8.  Then in the final 1:23 of the quarter, Bailey scored her fourth goal of the game to make it 11-8.

Denison then made it a 5-0 run with two goals in the first four and a half minutes of the fourth quarter by Ryann Yospa and McTague to make it 13-8.

In the end, McTague (4 goals, 1 assists) finished with five points to lead the Big Red while Bailey matched her with four goals and led the team with three groundballs. Additionally, Abby Van Metre finished with seven draw controls and Annie Rau had four caused turnovers.

In goal, Maeve Caldwell (2-2) finished with double-digit saves (10) for the first time on the season.

Denison moves to 2-2 overall with the win while Lynchburg, which fell 17-6 at home against No. 16 York (Pa.) its last time out on Friday, also moved to 2-2. It was the first meeting between Denison and Lynchburg since 1990 as the Big Red improved to 1-3 all-time against the Hornets.

Game number two of Denison's Spring Break trip will see the Big Red battle the No. 5 nationally-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Franklin and Marshall College, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16.
