HAINES CITY, Fla. (March 16, 2022) – The No. 19 Denison University women's lacrosse team played the middle game of its Spring Break trip to Florida and lost 20-10 against No. 6 nationally-ranked Franklin and Marshall College on Wednesday at the Feltrim Sports Village.
Denison trailed 4-0 to start this one before a goal by
Jane Bailey in the final minute and a half of the first quarter.
The Big Red then tallied five goals in the second quarter but conceded the first three of the period to fall behind 7-1 before F&M scored eight goals in all in the quarter to double up Denison and make it 12-6 at halftime.
Casey McTague opened the scoring in the second half on the assist from
Ashley Viglione to make it 12-7 just over three minutes into the third quarter, but Denison would get no closer than to within five the rest of the way.
McTague and
Emma Repke both finished with hat tricks for the Big Red while Viglione also had three points after tallying one goal and two assists.
Maddie Morrell and
Abby Van Metre both had three groundballs, and Van Metre also had two caused turnovers and nine draw controls. As a team, the Big Red finished with 19 draw controls compared to 14 for Franklin and Marshall.
Denison fell to 2-3 on the season and 0-4 all-time against F&M, which improved to 4-1 despite four of its first five games of the season being against fellow nationally-ranked teams. Denison and Franklin and Marshall first met in the NCAA Tournament in both the 1991 and 2006 seasons before the Diplomats won the previously most recent meeting between the two teams 14-4 in Puerto Rico in 2016.
The third and final game of Denison's Spring Break trip will see the Big Red play against Rowan University at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 18.
