GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 31, 2022) – Only two days before the start of North Coast Athletic Conference play, the Denison University softball team hosted Capital University for nonconference action on Thursday, and in the end, the Big Red won game one 8-0 in five innings before winning 11-3 also in five innings in game two at the Denison Softball Field.
Denison scored in all 10 innings on the day while both of its starting pitchers went the distance for a complete game.
Â
Game 1 (Denison 8, Capital 0):
- Denison scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits and two errors by the Comets.
- After hitting a two-RBI double to right center to score the first two runs of the game in the first inning, Jessica Hopkins hit a two-out, run-scoring double to right field in the second inning to make it 4-0 Big Red.
- The Big Red then loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the third, but got only one run on an infield single with two outs by the speedy leadoff hitter Claire Powell to make it 5-0.
- That was followed by a great diving catch in left field by Allie Kovatch for the first out of the fourth inning.
- After Hopkins reached for the third time in the game to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, Annabelle Calderon followed with a two-run home run off the foul pole in left field to make it 7-0.
- Sydney Silverstein (4-4), meanwhile, limited Capital to just three base runners (1 hit, 2 walks) while striking out seven through five innings.
- The run to walk it off in the bottom of the fifth inning was a single to shortstop by Maggie Ballentine, which led to a dropped ball by the first baseman that allowed Abby Arabia to score.
Â
Game 2 (Denison 11, Capital 3):
- Just like they did in game one, Denison scored at least one run in every inning in game two.
- Six Big Red players finished with two or more hits and Powell led the way with a 3-for-4 effort featuring three runs scored and two RBI's.
- Ballentine also scored three runs while she, Hopkins and Calderon also all had two RBI's.
- In all, Denison had eight extra base hits, including six doubles and the second home run of the day by Calderon.
- Sophia Parpala (4-0) pitched all five innings allowing three runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
Â
Records:
- In what was only its second home series of the season so far, Denison improved to above .500 on the season at 9-8 with what was also the Big Red's fourth straight sweep against Capital (2-10) since 2017.
