GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 26, 2022) – The No. 20 Denison University women's lacrosse team began North Coast Athletic Conference action with an 18-9 win at home against previously-undefeated Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Denison (5-3 overall, 1-0 NCAC) has now won 13 games in a row against OWU (8-1, 0-1) since the 2011 season. OWU, meanwhile, suffered its first loss of the season after entering the day with an average of 15.5 goals per game and only 6.3 goals per game allowed.
Tied 2-2 after one quarter, the Big Red scored the first four goals of the second quarter, including three in a row by
Ashley Viglione to put Denison ahead 6-2.
A goal by OWU with only 11 seconds left before halftime helped the Balling Bishops avoid being shutout in the quarter, but then Denison again scored the first four goals of the third quarter to make it 10-3.
In all, the Big Red outscored the Battling Bishops 7-3 in the third quarter as
Jane Bailey accounted for three of those seven goals.
Josie Lucchesi then scored back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter while Bailey added another.
With just under 10 minutes remaining, freshman
Caroline Brooks scored her first collegiate goal to make it a 10-goal game at 17-7, and then fellow-freshman
Maddie Van Slyke scored her first career goal just over two and a half minutes later to make it 18-7.
Bailey would finish with four goals on the day while Viglione had three goals and two assists (5 points) and Lucchesi also had a hat trick with three goals.
Kate Coward would finish with six draw controls and five caused turnovers while
Isabelle Brocato had four groundballs.
Maeve Caldwell played the first half in goal and made three saves while
Caroline O'Dea played the next nearly 23 minutes making four saves before freshman
Audrey Hughes saw action for the second game in a row and played the final seven minutes.
Saturday's win was the beginning of a stretch of six straight conference games for the Big Red, who will remain at home next weekend to host Allegheny College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 2.
